How to Check iPhone Battery Health — and When to Actually Replace It

Your iPhone grades its own battery: Settings → Battery → Battery Health shows maximum capacity, peak performance status, and (on newer models) cycle count. This guide explains what every number and message means, why 80% is the line that matters, and how to read the signs your battery is done before the percentage says so.

Every iPhone keeps a running report card on its own battery, and reading it takes 30 seconds: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. The harder part is knowing what the numbers actually mean — what counts as normal aging, which message is the one that says "replace me," and why a battery can pass its own health check and still ruin your day. This guide walks every line of that screen, the 80% rule, the cycle count trick added in iOS 17.4, and the honest signals that it's time.

Finding the Screen

Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging (on older iOS versions it's just "Battery Health"). You'll see up to four things, depending on your model and iOS version: Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, Charging Optimization, and — on iPhone 15 and later — Cycle Count. Let's take them one at a time.

Maximum Capacity: the Headline Number

This percentage compares how much charge your battery can hold now against when it was new. 100% means factory-fresh; 89% means a full charge today delivers 89% of the runtime it did on day one. This is chemical aging, it's universal, and no setting reverses it.

How to read yours:

  • 95–100%: essentially new. If your phone still dies fast, the battery isn't the reason — check Settings → Battery for an app eating power in the background, and see our battery draining fast guide.
  • 85–94%: normal mid-life. Noticeably shorter days than new, but healthy.
  • 81–84%: the retirement window is approaching. Start budgeting for a replacement, especially before a big trip.
  • 80% or below: the line. Details next.

Why 80% Is the Line That Matters

80% isn't folklore — it's Apple's own engineering threshold. iPhone batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of original capacity after 500 full charge cycles (iPhone 14 and earlier) or after 1,000 cycles on iPhone 15 and later, and Apple's battery service messaging kicks in around that mark. Below 80%, two things degrade at once:

  1. Runtime, obviously — you've lost a fifth or more of your day.
  2. Stability, less obviously — an aged battery struggles to deliver quick bursts of power, which is what causes sudden shutdowns at 30% and winter die-offs, and what triggers the performance management described next.

The screen itself will also show either "Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance" or a service message. When you see "Your battery's health is significantly degraded" — that's the phone formally asking for a new battery.

Peak Performance Capability: the Throttling Section

This section reports whether your iPhone has ever shut down unexpectedly because the battery couldn't deliver enough instantaneous power. If it has, iOS quietly enables performance management — deliberately smoothing peak processor speed to prevent more shutdowns. This is the famous "iPhone slowdown": it's real, it's documented, and it's a symptom of a worn battery, not of an old processor.

What you might see here:

  • "...supporting normal peak performance" — no shutdowns, no throttling. Great.
  • "...performance management has been applied" — your phone has already been shutting down and is now throttled. You can tap Disable, but the shutdowns will return; the actual fix is a new battery.
  • A degraded-health service message — capacity and stability are both gone; replacement recommended by the phone itself.

Cycle Count: the Odometer (iOS 17.4+)

A charge cycle is one full 100%-worth of discharge, in any combination (two days of 50% each = one cycle). Since iOS 17.4, iPhone 15 and later show cycle count right in the Battery Health screen, and also under Settings → General → About, scrolled down to the Battery section — alongside the battery's manufacture date and first-use date. (iPhone 14 and earlier don't display cycle count natively, on any iOS version.)

How to use it: iPhone 15/16 batteries are rated to hold 80% through about 1,000 cycles. A phone showing 200 cycles and 99% capacity is barely broken in; one showing 850 cycles and 82% is behaving exactly as designed — and approaching the line on schedule. Cycle count also helps when buying a used iPhone: capacity can be misleading right after a battery swap, but a mismatch (say, 100% capacity with 900 cycles) tells you a story worth asking about.

Charging Optimization: Settings, Not Symptoms

Also on this screen: Optimized Battery Charging (the phone learns your routine and holds at 80% overnight, finishing just before you wake) and, on iPhone 15 and later, an optional hard 80% charge limit. Two things to know: these features slow chemical aging and are worth keeping on; and a phone parked at 80% because of them is not broken — this single misunderstanding sends a steady stream of healthy phones to repair counters.

When the Numbers Lie: Symptoms That Outrank the Percentage

Maximum capacity is an estimate, and estimates drift. Trust these real-world signals over a pretty number:

  • Sudden shutdowns at 20–40% remaining, especially in cold weather
  • The percentage jumping erratically (drops 15% in minutes, or leaps upward on the charger)
  • The phone noticeably hot during ordinary use or charging
  • Needing a midday top-up on usage that used to last all day
  • A swollen battery — screen lifting at the edge, case bulging: stop using the phone and bring it in now; a swelling lithium cell is a genuine safety issue, not a wait-and-see

Any of these with a capacity reading in the 80s? Believe the symptoms. The health estimate lags reality, and a battery that's shutting your phone down has already made its decision.
