iPad Battery Draining Fast? Find the Culprit in 10 Minutes

iPads are supposed to sip power, so sudden drain has a findable cause: the battery usage chart names the greedy app, settings control the silent drains, and iPadOS 17's battery health readout tells you if the cell itself is worn out. Here's the 10-minute investigation.

An iPad that suddenly drains fast is telling on itself — you just have to check the logs. Unlike phones, iPads spend most of their life idle, which means standby drain and screen-on drain point to completely different culprits. The good news: iPadOS keeps receipts on both, and ten minutes of investigation usually names the offender. Work through this in order — evidence first, settings second, hardware last.

Minute 1–3: Read the Battery Usage Chart

Open Settings → Battery. This screen is the whole investigation in miniature:

  • The 24-hour and 10-day charts show when the drain happens. Steep slopes while you're using it point to an app or the screen; a staircase that keeps dropping overnight points to background activity or a worn battery.
  • Battery usage by app shows who's responsible. Tap "Show Activity" and look for apps with heavy background time — an app you barely opened that ate 30% of the battery from the background is your smoking gun.

Common offenders on iPads specifically: video apps left in picture-in-picture, cloud photo apps indexing a large library, games left suspended mid-session, and a misbehaving app after an update. If one app dominates, force-quit it, update it, and if it keeps misbehaving, delete and reinstall it. That alone solves a large share of "draining fast" cases.

Minute 4–6: Shut Down the Silent Drains

If no single app is guilty, the drain is usually death by a thousand settings. These five matter most on iPads:

  1. Screen brightness — the display is by far the biggest consumer in a device this size; a maxed-out 11-to-13-inch panel dwarfs everything else. Turn on auto-brightness (Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size) and nudge the slider down.
  2. Background App Refresh — Settings → General → Background App Refresh. You don't need to kill it globally; turn it off for the heavy hitters the battery chart identified.
  3. Location Services — Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. Any app set to "Always" that isn't a navigation app should be "While Using."
  4. Push mail and widgets — a mail account set to push polls constantly; switch to fetch every 30 minutes (Settings → Mail → Accounts → Fetch New Data). Lock Screen widgets that update live cost standby battery too.
  5. Auto-Lock — Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock. An iPad set to "Never" that gets left face-up on the couch burns its screen for hours. Two to five minutes is the sane setting.

Also worth one check each: keep iPadOS updated (drain bugs get patched; Settings → General → Software Update), and know that the first day or two after a major update is legitimately hungry — the iPad re-indexes everything, then settles.

Minute 7–8: Check Whether the Battery Itself Is Worn

Here's the check most people don't know exists. On iPads released in 2022 or later running iPadOS 17 or newer (iPad 10th Gen, recent Air, Mini, and Pro models), go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. You'll see:

  • Maximum Capacity — the battery's current full charge versus when it was new. Below ~85%, shorter runtime is chemistry, not settings; below 80%, replacement is the honest fix.
  • Cycle Count — how many full charge cycles the battery has lived. iPad batteries are rated to hold about 80% capacity through 1,000 cycles, so the count tells you how far along its life it is.

On older iPads, this menu doesn't exist — iPadOS simply doesn't show battery health for models before 2022. Don't trust random "battery checker" apps, which can only guess. Minute 9–10: The Overnight Standby Test
