An iPad screen that stops responding to touch is, more often than not, a software or accessory problem wearing a hardware costume. Symptom 1: Nothing Responds at All — Screen On, Totally Frozen
Likely cause: a crashed app or a wedged iPadOS, not the screen.
The touch layer can be perfectly healthy while the software that listens to it is locked up. The tell: the image on screen isn't updating either — the clock is stuck, video is frozen, nothing animates.
The fix is a force restart, which works even when touch doesn't:
- iPads without a Home button: press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the top button until the Apple logo appears (10–20 seconds).
- iPads with a Home button: hold the Home button and the top button together until you see the Apple logo.
If touch comes back after the restart, you're done — though if this repeats weekly, update iPadOS (Settings → General → Software Update) and consider what app was running each time it froze. A storage-full iPad (under ~2 GB free) also freezes this way; check Settings → General → iPad Storage.
Symptom 2: Touch Works, But Badly — Laggy, Missed Taps, Random Ghost Touches
Likely cause: something between your finger and the glass, or electrical interference.
Work through these in order, testing after each:
- Take off the screen protector. Thick tempered-glass protectors, protectors with trapped dust or air bubbles, and cheap ones that have started lifting at the edges all degrade the capacitive signal. This is the single most common fix we perform at the counter, and it costs nothing.
- Clean and dry the screen — and your hands. A film of moisture, sunscreen, or kitchen grease makes the digitizer read phantom contact points. Wipe with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, then dry.
- Unplug everything. Cheap uncertified chargers and cables are notorious for injecting electrical noise that makes touch jumpy or dead while plugged in. If touch is fine on battery and haywire while charging, the charger is your culprit — replace it with an MFi-certified one. The same applies to hubs and keyboard cases: disconnect accessories, including Bluetooth ones, and retest.
- Mind the temperature. An iPad that just came out of a cold car or sat in direct sun will misread touch until it returns to room temperature. Give it 15–20 minutes.

Symptom 3: One Zone Is Dead, or It Started After a Drop
Likely cause: a damaged digitizer — the touch-sensing layer laminated to the glass.
The digitizer is a grid of transparent sensors. When it's damaged — by a drop, by pressure (an iPad at the bottom of a heavy backpack), or by a crack you can barely see — it fails in patterns software never produces:
- A dead stripe or corner where taps do nothing, while the rest of the screen works
- Touch that dies and revives when you flex the iPad slightly or press near the frame
- Ghost touches clustered in one region, often along a crack line
- Problems that began immediately after a drop or impact, even if the glass looks intact — the fracture can be internal
A force restart is still worth one try, but if the dead zone maps to the same physical location every time, no amount of software will resurrect it. Symptom 4: Screen Is Black but the iPad Is On
