iPhone Won't Turn On? 7 Fixes to Try First

An iPhone that won't turn on is usually crashed or deeply discharged — not dead. Work through these 7 fixes in order, from the model-specific force restart to recovery mode, and learn exactly when it's time for a free diagnostic.

Nine times out of ten, an iPhone that won't turn on isn't dead — it's either crashed or deeply discharged, and both are fixable at home in minutes. Before you assume the worst (or pay anyone a cent), work through these seven fixes in order. Each one takes only a few minutes, and each step tells you something about what's actually wrong. If you get to the end without a working phone, the last step costs you nothing: diagnostics at iFixForU are always free.

Fix 1: Force Restart — the Fix That Solves the Most Cases

A frozen iPhone can look completely dead: black screen, no response to the power button, nothing. The screen is off but the system is stuck, and a force restart clears it without touching your data. The button combo depends on your model — get it exactly right:

  • iPhone 8 or later (including iPhone SE 2020/2022, iPhone X through 16): press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button for 15–20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Don't give up at 10 seconds — a truly wedged phone can take a while.
  • iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: press and hold Volume Down + the Side button together until the Apple logo shows.
  • iPhone 6s or earlier (and original SE): press and hold the Home button + the Power button together until you see the logo.

If the Apple logo appears, you're done — it was a software crash, and no repair is needed. If the screen stays black, move to Fix 2.

Fix 2: Charge It for 30–60 Minutes — the Right Way

A deeply discharged battery won't respond instantly. Plug the phone into a wall outlet (not a laptop USB port, which may not supply enough power) using a cable and adapter you know work, and leave it alone for at least 30 minutes. A few things to know:

  • A deeply drained iPhone can take 10–15 minutes before it shows the charging screen at all. Silence in the first few minutes means nothing.
  • After 30 minutes on the charger, try the force restart from Fix 1 again while the phone is still plugged in. This combination revives a surprising number of "dead" iPhones.

Still black after an hour on a good charger? Move to Fix 3.

Fix 3: Rule Out the Cable, Adapter, and Port

You can't tell a dead phone from a dead charger without swapping parts. Try a different certified cable, a different wall adapter, and a different outlet. Then look into the charging port with a flashlight: compacted pocket lint is one of the most common reasons a phone silently fails to charge — the plug seats into fluff instead of the pins. If you see debris, you can gently lift it out with a wooden toothpick or plastic pick (never metal, never liquids). If the port looks damaged or charging has been flaky for weeks, the port itself may be failing — see our iPhone charging port repair cost guide for what that runs ($79–$129 by model).

Swapped everything and still nothing? Move to Fix 4.

Fix 4: Check for Signs of Life

This step tells you whether you have a power problem or a screen problem. With the phone on a charger, check for:

  • Vibration or sounds when you toggle the ring/silent switch or when someone calls or texts you
  • An alarm going off at its usual time
  • A warm spot on the back after charging a while
  • Your Mac or PC reacting when you plug the phone in

Any of these means the iPhone is actually on — the display just isn't showing anything. That's usually a failed screen or a loose display connection after a drop, and it's a straightforward repair: screen replacement at iFixForU runs $119–$329 depending on model, takes about 30 minutes, and your data stays untouched. No signs of life at all? Move to Fix 5.

Fix 5: Connect to a Computer and Try Recovery Mode

Plug the iPhone into a Mac (Finder) or PC (iTunes/Apple Devices app). If the computer detects it, the phone is alive and a corrupted iOS is the likely culprit. Put it in recovery mode: perform the same button sequence as the force restart for your model, but keep holding the final button past the Apple logo until you see the recovery screen (a cable pointing at a computer). When your computer offers the choice, always click Update first, not Restore — Update reinstalls iOS while keeping your data; Restore erases everything.

If the computer doesn't see the phone at all, move to Fix 6.

Fix 6: Think Back — Was There a Drop, Water, or Heat?

Be honest with this one, because it changes what you should do next:

  • Dropped recently? An internal connector may have jarred loose, or the board may be damaged. Stop here — more button-mashing won't help.
  • Any contact with liquid — rain, a splash, a humid bathroom? Stop charging it immediately. Pushing power into a wet phone causes shorts and corrosion. Read our guide on what to do when an iPhone gets wet before anything else.
  • Left in a hot car or charged on a cheap uncertified charger overnight? Heat and dirty power can kill a battery or damage charging circuitry.

If any of these apply — or if you've simply run out of steps — it's time for Fix 7.

Fix 7: Get a Free Diagnostic (Seriously, $0)

At this point the problem is hardware: a dead battery, a failed screen, a faulty charging circuit, or board-level damage. You can't fix any of those with button combos, and neither can a YouTube video. What you can do is find out exactly what's wrong for free. Bring the phone to any iFixForU location — our technicians test power delivery, battery, display, and board response, and give you a straight answer in about 20 minutes. The diagnostic is $0 whether or not you repair with us. If it's a dead battery, that's a $69–$109 fix done in about 30 minutes with a 90-day warranty. If it's the screen, $119–$329 by model. If it's board-level, we'll tell you honestly what recovery looks like — and if a repair doesn't make financial sense for your phone, we'll say that too.

What You Can Fix Yourself vs. What Needs a Shop

You can handle at home: software crashes (force restart), a drained battery (proper charging), a bad cable or adapter (swap it), light port lint (wooden pick), a corrupted iOS (recovery mode + Update).

Leave to a technician: battery replacement, screen replacement, charging port replacement, anything after a drop, and especially anything involving liquid — water damage worsens by the hour, and opening the phone yourself usually makes it worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to fix an iPhone that won't turn on?

It depends entirely on the cause, which is why the diagnostic is free. Common outcomes at iFixForU: battery replacement $69–$109, screen replacement $119–$329 (see the full screen repair price table), charging port $79–$129. Software fixes and no-fault-found checks cost nothing.

Will I lose my data?

A force restart, charging, and recovery-mode Update all preserve your data. Battery, screen, and port replacements don't touch storage either. Only a full Restore erases the phone — which is why we always try everything else first.

My iPhone died overnight and won't come back. Why?

Usually one of three things: the battery drained fully and needs a long charge before responding, iOS crashed during an overnight update (force restart fixes it), or an aging battery finally failed — common on phones three or more years old.

It turns on but keeps shutting off. Same problem?

Related, and usually simpler: random shutdowns on an older iPhone point to a worn battery. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health; below about 80% capacity, a replacement typically cures it.
