A MacBook that won't turn on is usually not a dead MacBook. At our repair benches, the most common outcomes for "it's completely dead" are, in order: a drained battery that needed real charging time, a stuck power state cleared by the right reset, and a dead screen on a machine that was actually booting fine the whole time. Genuine logic-board failure exists, but it's the last suspect, not the first.
The catch is that the right fix depends on which chip you have, because a lot of advice floating around is ten years stale. Work through these steps in order — each one rules something out.
Step 0: Which MacBook Do You Have?
Click the Apple menu → About This Mac (if you could do that, you wouldn't be here — so check the underside etching or your purchase records instead):
- Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4, 2020 onward): there is no SMC to reset. Any guide telling you to press Shift-Control-Option on an M-series Mac is wasting your time — those keys do nothing. Your reset is the 10-second power hold in Step 2.
- Intel (2020 and earlier): SMC and NVRAM resets are real and sometimes exactly what's needed — Step 3.
Step 1: Prove Power Is Actually Getting In
A MacBook that ran its battery flat can need several minutes on the charger before it responds at all — plug it in and give it a genuine 10–30 minutes, not thirty seconds.
While you wait, verify the charging path:
- MagSafe models: is the LED on the connector lit? Amber or green means power is flowing; dark means it isn't — try another outlet, check both ends of the cable, and look for debris in the MagSafe port.
- USB-C charging: try each port — individual USB-C ports fail independently, and one dead port with three good ones is common. Listen for the charging chime when you connect.
- Swap outlets (not power strips), and if you can borrow a known-good USB-C charger of 60W or more, that one swap rules out the entire adapter-and-cable chain.
No LED, no chime, no response on any port with a known-good charger? Note that — it points toward the charging circuit — and still do Step 2, because a stuck power state can also silence all of the above.
Step 2: The 10-Second Power Hold (All Macs, Especially Apple Silicon)
With the charger connected: press and hold the power button (Touch ID button) for a full 10 seconds, release, wait a few seconds, then press it once normally.
On Apple Silicon this is the closest thing to an SMC reset that exists — it forces the machine fully off, out of whatever wedged low-power state it's stuck in. It's also the entry ramp to recovery options: keep holding past 10 seconds and an M-series Mac will boot to startup options when it's able. This one move revives a remarkable share of "completely dead" M-series MacBooks.
Step 3: Intel Only — SMC and NVRAM Resets
On Intel MacBooks the System Management Controller governs power, charging, fans, and the power button itself, and it can wedge:
- SMC reset (laptops with non-removable battery): shut down, then hold Shift + Control + Option (left side) + the power button together for 10 seconds, release all, then press power. On T2-chip models (2018–2020), use the right Shift with left Control and Option; if that doesn't take, hold the power button alone 10 seconds first, then repeat.
- NVRAM reset (if it powers on but won't boot right): immediately after pressing power, hold Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds.
Apple Silicon Macs handle both functions automatically at boot — there is nothing equivalent to reset by hand.
Step 4: Is It Booting With a Dead Screen?
Before assuming no boot, check for signs of life with the lid open in a quiet room: the startup chime, fan whir, keyboard backlight, a warm chassis after a few minutes, or the caps-lock light toggling. Any of those on a black screen means the Mac is running and the display path is the problem.
Confirm it: connect an external monitor or TV via USB-C/HDMI. Also try cycling brightness (F2) — a brightness stuck at zero has embarrassed more than one of us.
Step 5: Liquid? Stop Everything, Right Now
If there's any chance liquid met this MacBook — even a small splash, even yesterday — do not keep trying to power it on, and do not charge it. Every powered minute pushes current through wet circuitry and accelerates corrosion; charging is worst of all. Unplug the charger, power off if it's on (hold the power button), leave the lid open, and get it to a bench within a day or two, not next month. Liquid damage treated early is routinely recoverable; the same spill after two weeks of "it still sort of works" often isn't. The diagnostic is free either way.
Step 6: When It's Genuinely Hardware
If every step above came up empty on known-good power, the realistic suspects are the battery, the charging port/circuit, or the logic board. What the free bench diagnostic separates in about 20 minutes:

Modern MacBook batteries are glued in, the boards are dense with tiny surface-mount parts, and Apple Silicon storage is soldered — meaning a botched board repair can take your data with it.
