A phone that suddenly refuses to charge wirelessly feels broken, but in our experience at the repair counter, most "broken" wireless charging is a physics problem, not a hardware problem — and physics problems are free to fix. Before you buy a new pad or book a repair, work down the ladder below in order. It's arranged from most-likely-and-free to least-likely-and-repairable, which is exactly how we diagnose it in store. First, thirty seconds on how the trick works, because every failure on the list makes sense once you see the mechanism.
How Wireless Charging Actually Works
Qi charging (pronounced "chee" — the standard used by iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel, and virtually every pad) is two coils flirting through the air. The pad's transmitter coil runs alternating current to create a rapidly flipping magnetic field; a receiver coil glued inside your phone's back cover converts that field back into current. For the handoff to work, three things must be true: the coils must be close (a few millimeters — the field decays brutally fast with distance), aligned (centered over each other, not just overlapping), and unobstructed by metal (a magnetic field treats a steel plate the way a flashlight treats a brick wall — worse, actually: the metal heats up).
Close, aligned, no metal. Every rung of the troubleshooting ladder is one of those three failing, until the last rung, where the coil itself has.
The Troubleshooting Ladder
Rung 1: The Case and Everything Attached to It
The single most common culprit we see. Take the case completely off and try charging bare. If it works, the case is guilty — now find out which of its crimes:
- Thickness. Most phones charge reliably through up to ~3 mm of plastic. Rugged two-layer cases, wallet folios, and thick bumpers push past the field's useful range.
- Metal. Magnetic mount plates glued inside the case, metal ring holders, kickstands, and pop-out grips with metal cores sit directly in the field's path.
- Cards. A credit card or transit card slipped between case and phone doesn't just block charging — the field can corrupt magnetic stripes and heat the card. Hotel keycards die this way constantly.
Rung 2: Alignment
If the bare phone still won't charge, reposition it deliberately: the receiver coil sits at the center of the phone's back, not the center of gravity, and on a flat pad a centimeter of drift is the difference between charging and nothing. Larger phones on small pads misalign constantly; phones nudged by a nightstand cable slide off-center overnight — the classic "it was charging when I fell asleep" mystery. Magnetic-alignment systems (MagSafe and its Qi2 descendants) exist precisely because humans are bad at this rung.
Rung 3: The Pad and Its Power Supply
Wireless charging is a chain: wall adapter → cable → pad → phone, and the weakest link rules. A pad rated for 15 W fed by an old 5 W cube will charge slowly, intermittently, or not at all — the pad browns out every time the phone asks for full power. Test with the adapter and cable the pad shipped with (or equivalents you trust), try a different outlet, and try a different phone on the same pad if one's available: that single test cleanly splits "pad problem" from "phone problem." Bargain-bin pads also simply die, and they fail flaky — working at night, dead by morning — long before they fail completely.
Rung 4: Software and Heat
Two non-obvious behaviors masquerade as failure. First, the simple one: restart the phone — charging is negotiated by software, and a glitched charging service can ignore a perfectly good field; a reboot and pending OS updates fix more charging complaints than anyone likes to admit. Second, thermal management: wireless charging generates more heat than cable charging, and phones deliberately slow or pause charging when hot. A phone in a thick case, on a pad, in the sun, at 1% battery is a heat problem stacked on a heat problem. Similarly, optimization features that hold charge at 80% overnight are policies, not faults.
Rung 5: Actual Hardware — When It's Time for a Repair
If a bare, restarted, well-aligned phone won't charge on a pad that provably charges other phones, you've earned the right to suspect hardware. The usual suspects, roughly in order:
- The receiver coil and its flex cable. The coil is a delicate copper spiral bonded to the back housing, connected by a small flex cable. Drops — especially back-down drops — can crack the coil or pop the connector. - The wireless charging IC. The chip that manages induction charging sits on the logic board and can fail from liquid exposure or board flex. This is board-level work — diagnosable, and often repairable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does wireless charging damage the battery?
Not meaningfully. It runs warmer than cable charging, and heat is the thing lithium batteries dislike — but phones throttle charging to manage it. Millions of phones live on pads for years with ordinary battery aging. If you want to be gentle: charge caseless on a pad, or use a cable for the daily big charge.
Is MagSafe different from Qi?
MagSafe is Apple's magnet-aligned implementation on top of the same induction principle, and its ideas were absorbed into the Qi2 standard — so magnetic alignment is spreading everywhere. The magnets solve Rung 2 (alignment) permanently, which is most of why MagSafe feels more reliable than a flat pad.
My phone charges wirelessly but really slowly. Broken?
Probably not — check the chain. Slow wireless charging is usually an underpowered adapter, a thick case adding heat, or a pad whose rated wattage your phone doesn't fully support. Wireless is also inherently slower than a good cable; that's the physics tax for the convenience.
It stopped working after my phone got wet. Related?
Very possibly. The charging IC and coil connector are common casualties of liquid exposure, and the failure can surface days later as corrosion spreads. Mention the water event when you bring it in — it changes where we look first.
The pad charges my phone but gets hot enough to worry me. Normal?
Warm is normal; hot-to-the-touch is not. Usually it's a metal object in the field (check the case again) or a failing pad. Stop using anything that smells or discolors — a $12 pad is not worth a $649 screen sitting above a heat source overnight, let alone the battery.
