Face ID & Fingerprint Not Working? Honest Biometrics Diagnosis & Repair
When facial recognition or a fingerprint sensor stops working, the cause can be a loose cable, a damaged connector, a software glitch, or a security-locked module that simply cannot be swapped. At iFixForU (est. 2009), we run a free diagnostic to tell you honestly whether it's a genuine repair or a hardware limit before you spend a dollar.
IMPORTANT: On most modern phones, Face ID / Touch ID hardware is cryptographically paired to the logic board for security. A cheap screen or part swap from a DIY kit or a discount shop very often kills Face ID or Touch ID PERMANENTLY, and no software can bring it back. Do not attempt to replace biometric modules yourself — bring it in for a free diagnosis first so you don't lose the feature for good.
Professional tools we use
The repair process
-
1
Intake & symptom review
We start by listening: when did the problem begin, was the phone dropped or wet, and has anyone opened it or swapped a screen recently? These details often point straight to whether we're chasing a physical fault or a locked module.
💡 Tell us the truth about any prior repair — it saves diagnostic time and helps us protect the biometric feature.
-
2
Free diagnosis: repairable fault vs. security-locked module
Our free diagnostic separates two very different situations: a genuinely repairable fault such as a loose flex, a corroded connector, or a dirty sensor, versus a security-paired module that has lost its bond to the logic board. We tell you which one you have before any work begins.
💡 If the module is security-locked, honest shops will say so up front — no repair or aftermarket part can restore that pairing.
-
3
Software & enrollment checks
Before opening anything, we rule out the easy causes: a pending system update, a corrupted enrollment, an accessory or case blocking the sensor, or settings that were changed by accident. Sometimes a fresh face or fingerprint re-enrollment after an update is all it takes.
💡 Keep your phone's software up to date — some biometric glitches are fixed by the manufacturer in an update.
-
4
Careful disassembly & inspection
At an anti-static workstation, our technician opens the device and inspects the biometric flex cables, connectors, and sensor contacts under magnification. We look for lifted connectors, bent pins, moisture damage, and cables that were pinched or torn during a previous repair.
💡 Damage from a prior amateur repair is common — this is why we inspect before quoting.
-
5
Repair the flex/connector or clean & reseat where possible
When the fault is mechanical rather than security-locked, we fix what can be fixed: reseating or replacing a damaged flex cable, cleaning corroded contacts, or re-securing a connector that had worked loose. These are exactly the cases where a real repair, not a part swap, brings the feature back.
💡 Cable and connector repairs preserve the original security pairing, so the biometric feature stays intact.
-
6
Honest outcome & alternatives if security-locked
If the module is security-locked and the pairing can't be restored, we tell you plainly rather than selling you a repair that won't work. We'll then walk you through your real options — using a passcode or pattern, alternate unlock methods, or manufacturer-level service — so you can decide what's worth it.
💡 A shop that promises to "restore" a security-locked Face ID with an aftermarket part is not being honest with you.
-
7
Reassembly, testing & quality control
After any repair, we reassemble carefully and put the biometrics through real-world testing: multiple face scans in different lighting or repeated fingerprint reads to confirm consistent, fast recognition. We also verify the screen, sensors, and seals are all working before we hand it back.
💡 We don't consider the job done until the feature works reliably, not just once.

Frequently asked questions
Why did Face ID stop working after a cheap screen repair? +
On most modern phones, parts tied to Face ID or Touch ID are cryptographically paired to the logic board. A discount shop or DIY kit that swaps or disturbs those parts without the proper process usually breaks that pairing permanently, and no software can restore it — which is why we diagnose first and warn you before any part is touched.
Can you always replace a broken Face ID or fingerprint sensor? +
Not always, and we won't pretend otherwise. When the failure is a cable, connector, or dirty contact, we can often repair it and keep the feature working. But when the biometric module itself is security-locked to the board, that part cannot be transplanted or replaced with an aftermarket one without losing the feature — and we'll tell you that honestly during your free diagnosis.
Does this apply to Samsung and other Android phones too? +
Yes. While the details differ by brand and model, most modern iPhone, Samsung, and other Android devices protect biometric hardware in similar ways, so the same rules apply: some faults are genuinely repairable, and some are hardware-locked. Our free diagnosis identifies which situation your specific device is in.
