Port Your Number: Keep Your Phone Number When Switching Carriers
Switching carriers but want to keep the number you have had for years? At iFixForU, our team handles the whole port-over for you in-store, free of charge. This guide walks you through what to bring, how the process works, and how we make sure you never lose your number along the way.
Do NOT cancel or shut off your old line before the port finishes. Your number must stay active on the old carrier for the transfer to succeed. If you cancel first, the number is released and usually cannot be recovered. Also make sure the account details you give us match the old carrier's records exactly, mismatches are the number-one reason a port gets rejected.
Professional tools we use
The repair process
-
1
Gather the info from your old carrier
Before you come in, collect your old carrier account number, your port-out (transfer) PIN, and the billing name and ZIP code on that account. Most carriers let you generate a fresh port-out PIN from their app or website, or by calling their support line.
💡 Port-out PINs often expire after a short window, so grab it close to your visit or right here with our help.
-
2
We verify your details and submit the port request
In-store, we double-check that your account number, PIN, and billing details match what the old carrier expects, then submit the port-in request to your new carrier for you. Getting every field right up front is what keeps the transfer smooth.
💡 We enter the number exactly as it appears on your old bill, digit for digit, to avoid a rejection.
-
3
Keep the old line active while it processes
Once the request is in, leave your old service running exactly as it is. The port needs your number to be live on the old carrier so the two systems can hand it off cleanly. Just go about your day, calls and texts keep working until the switch happens.
💡 Resist the urge to cancel the old plan early, doing so can cancel the port too.
-
4
The port completes and your number moves over
When the new carrier finishes the transfer, your number moves onto the new SIM card or eSIM and the old line automatically stops. You will usually notice the old SIM lose signal at the moment the switch finalizes, that is the sign it worked.
💡 If you are moving to an eSIM, we scan or install the profile for you right at the counter.
-
5
Verify calls, texts, and data on your number
Before you leave, we test your line together: place a call, send a text, and load a page over mobile data to confirm everything runs on the new carrier. We also make sure your voicemail is set up and your number displays correctly.
💡 A quick restart after the port often clears up any lingering signal or data hiccups.
-
6
We help with any carrier follow-up
If the old carrier sends a final bill, asks a verification question, or the port needs a nudge, we stay in your corner. Bring any messages you receive back to the shop and we will help you sort them out at no charge.
💡 Keep your final statement from the old carrier for a couple of months in case a prorated credit is owed.

Frequently asked questions
How long does porting my number take? +
Most wireless-to-wireless ports complete within a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally take up to a business day if the carriers need extra verification. We will let you know what to expect based on your situation and follow up if it runs long.
Will I lose service while the number is transferring? +
No, as long as you keep the old line active, your calls and texts keep working right up until the moment the port finalizes on the new carrier. There is only a brief handoff, not an extended outage. That is exactly why we never cancel the old service ahead of time.
What if my number is a landline or a different type of line? +
Landline, VoIP, and business numbers can often be ported to a mobile carrier too, but they follow different rules and may take longer or need extra paperwork from the current provider. Bring your account details and we will check whether your specific number is eligible before we start.
