Know Your Baseline First
Slow is relative, so here's the honest math. With a 20W or higher USB-C adapter and a good cable, every iPhone from the 12 onward should hit roughly 50% in 30 minutes and full in about 90. With the little 5W cube — the square brick Apple shipped for a decade — the same phone takes 3 hours or more. If your "slow charging" matches the 5W timeline, the mystery may already be solved.
Culprit 1: The Old 5W Brick (the Most Common Answer)
That small square USB-A cube from an old iPhone box, hotel drawer, or gas station charges at one quarter of the speed your phone can accept. People plug into whatever brick is nearest and blame the phone.
How to tell: look at the port on the brick itself. A USB-A (rectangular) port on a small cube is almost certainly 5W–12W. What you want is a 20W+ USB-C PD adapter — around $15–$20 for a name brand — paired with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable (or C-to-C on iPhone 15/16). Also worth knowing: a laptop USB port often supplies even less than 5W, and a multi-port hub splits its output across devices. Charge from a wall.
Culprit 2: The Cable
Cables fail more often than any other link in the chain, and they fail gradually — a frayed or worn cable will charge, just slowly, or only at certain angles. Cheap uncertified cables are worse: they may cap current, drop the connection repeatedly, or trigger the "accessory not supported" popup.
The test costs nothing: borrow a known-good certified cable (MFi-certified for Lightning, or any reputable USB-C cable for iPhone 15/16) and compare charging speed. If the loaner is dramatically faster, you're done — recycle the old cable. As a rule, if a cable's jacket is torn, kinked at the connector, or the plug wobbles, its days of full-speed charging are over.
Culprit 3: A Dirty (or Dying) Charging Port
Every time the phone goes in your pocket, the port inhales a little lint. Over months it compacts into a dense plug that pushes the connector pins slightly out of contact — the phone still charges, just poorly, and the cable may feel loose or need a wiggle. Shine a flashlight in: if you see grey fuzz where there should be metal, that's your answer. Here's the piece most people don't know: as a lithium battery ages, its internal resistance rises, and the phone deliberately slows the charge rate to keep temperature and voltage safe. An old battery doesn't just drain faster — it fills slower, and the effect compounds every few months.

Culprit 5: Charging In, Draining Out
A charger can only win if it pours in faster than the phone burns. Navigation running, a game open, a hotspot broadcasting, video calls, or a misbehaving background app can eat most of what a weak charger supplies — the classic "charged for an hour and gained 15%." Heat makes it worse: a hot phone throttles its own charging speed to protect the battery, so charging under a pillow, in direct sun, or inside a thick case slows things further.

Two Things That Look Like Problems but Aren't
