A MacBook that used to last all day and now dies by lunch has exactly two categories of explanation: something is burning power it shouldn't, or the battery can no longer hold what it used to. Interrogate the Suspects: Activity Monitor
Open Activity Monitor (Spotlight: ⌘-Space, type "Activity Monitor") and click the Energy tab. This is macOS's confession log:
- Energy Impact shows what's burning power right now. Sort by it, descending.
- 12 hr Power shows the average over the past twelve hours — this is the column that catches intermittent offenders.
What you're looking for: any single process pinned high while you're doing nothing. The usual suspects, in rough order of frequency on our bench: a browser drowning in tabs (Chrome especially — each tab is a process, and one misbehaving ad can peg a CPU core), video calls and streaming, cloud sync clients (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive re-indexing), Spotlight indexing after an update or big file transfer (mds_stores — this one resolves itself, give it a few hours), and runaway background helpers from apps you forgot you installed.
Found one? Quit it (select, then the ⓧ button), update it, or uninstall it. If a browser is the villain, close tabs ruthlessly or switch heavy sites to Safari, which is meaningfully more efficient on Mac hardware.
Also check the battery menu itself: click the battery icon in the menu bar and macOS will list apps "Using Significant Energy" — the same evidence, zero effort.
The Two Settings That Out-Drain Everything Else
Before touching anything exotic, fix the display, because it's the single largest consumer in the machine:
- Screen brightness. The difference between 100% and 60% brightness is hours of runtime. Enable auto-brightness (System Settings → Displays → "Automatically adjust brightness") and stop riding max.
- Keyboard backlight. Quietly on at full blast in a bright room, all day. Set it to adjust automatically (System Settings → Keyboard) or turn it down manually.
Two more with real impact: Low Power Mode (System Settings → Battery) is genuinely effective on modern MacBooks and barely noticeable for everyday work; and in System Settings → Battery → Options, make sure "Wake for network access" isn't letting the lid-closed Mac stay busy all night — overnight drain with the lid shut is this setting's signature crime. Software tuned, still dying early? Time to read the battery's odometer. Hold the Option key and click the Apple menu → System Information → Power (under Hardware). Three lines matter:
- Cycle Count. One cycle = one full discharge-and-recharge, accumulated in fractions. Modern MacBook batteries are rated for 1,000 cycles before dropping below 80% of original capacity. At 300 cycles you're young; at 800+ you're reading this article for a reason.
- Condition. "Normal" or "Service Recommended." When macOS itself says Service Recommended, the debate is over — the OS has already measured degradation past its own threshold.
- Full Charge Capacity vs. design. The raw mAh number tells you how much tank is actually left.
There's a friendlier summary at System Settings → Battery → Battery Health. And one more symptom that trumps any readout: a MacBook that shuts down abruptly at 20–30%, or shows wildly jumpy percentages, has a worn cell lying to its own gauge.
