What Is Microsoldering?
Microsoldering is component-level repair performed directly on a device's logic board — the main circuit board that controls everything your phone, tablet, or laptop does. Unlike a standard screen replacement or battery swap, microsoldering targets individual electronic components: resistors, capacitors, integrated circuits (ICs), and the microscopic solder joints connecting them.
The name comes from the scale of the work. The components being handled are often smaller than a grain of rice, and the solder pads they sit on can be measured in fractions of a millimeter. Technicians use stereo microscopes with 7× to 45× magnification to see what they're working on, and specialized precision tools to manipulate parts that are invisible to the naked eye.
Board-level repair is the highest skill tier in the electronics repair industry. It sits above standard part-swap repairs the way open-heart surgery sits above setting a broken arm — a completely different level of training, tooling, and consequence.
How the Process Works
A board-level repair job follows a structured sequence:
1. Free Diagnostic
Before any work begins, a technician performs a free diagnostic to confirm the problem is board-level and identify which component or circuit is at fault. This saves you money: many issues that seem board-related (no charge, no power) actually have simpler causes like a failed charging port or a dead battery.
2. Disassembly
The device is carefully opened and the logic board removed. All connectors and shields are documented and set aside.
3. Ultrasonic Cleaning
For water-damage cases, the board goes into an ultrasonic cleaner — a bath of distilled water or specialized fluid that vibrates at 40,000+ Hz to dislodge mineral deposits and corrosion from around components. This step alone sometimes restores function before any soldering is needed.
4. Microscope Inspection
The board is placed under a trinocular stereo microscope. The technician checks for burnt components, cracked solder joints, lifted pads, corrosion tracks, and shorted areas. Multimeters and thermal cameras identify circuits that are drawing too much or too little current.
5. Hot-Air Rework
A precision hot-air rework station delivers temperature-controlled airflow (typically 300–400 °C) to a targeted area, reflowing the solder around the target component until it can be removed with fine tweezers. The same station installs the replacement part with fresh solder paste or flux.
Smaller discrete components (resistors, capacitors) are replaced individually. Larger ICs — like a charging controller or power management unit — are reballed (new solder balls applied) before reinstallation.
6. Multi-Stage Testing
After reassembly, the board is powered on in stages using a bench power supply that limits current so a short can't cause secondary damage. Function tests confirm the repaired circuit is behaving correctly before the device is fully reassembled.
When Do You Actually Need Microsoldering?

A port replacement fixes the mechanical connector but leaves the IC problem untouched. If a new port doesn't resolve your charging issue, board-level work is the next step.
A real-world example: a Google Pixel 8 with a failed charging controller costs roughly $149–$199 for board repair at a qualified shop — versus $599 or more for a replacement device through a carrier or $800+ for Apple or Google's out-of-warranty depot service.
Face ID After Third-Party Screen Repair
iPhone Face ID is cryptographically paired to the original logic board. If a technician who replaced your screen damaged the flex cables or connectors associated with the TrueDepth camera system, board-level micro-pad repair may be the only way to restore Face ID without replacing the entire phone.
Water Damage
Dropping a phone in water doesn't kill it instantly — corrosion does, over hours and days. Mineral deposits from tap water or saltwater bridge adjacent pads on the logic board, causing shorts. Ultrasonic cleaning followed by targeted component replacement addresses corrosion that contact-cleaner spray simply cannot reach.
