The Claim
The folk remedy goes like this: uncooked rice is a desiccant — it absorbs moisture — so sealing a wet phone in a bag of rice for 24 to 48 hours will draw the water out and save it. It sounds plausible. It has three separate problems, and any one of them alone would sink it.
Problem 1: The Water Is Somewhere Rice Can't Reach
A desiccant can only absorb water vapor from the air that touches it. It cannot pull liquid water out of an enclosed space by remote influence.
Now picture where the dangerous water in your phone actually is: inside a chassis sealed with adhesive gaskets, past the display bonding, under the electromagnetic shields soldered over the logic board, wicked by capillary action into board-to-board connectors and beneath chips. The same engineering that earns modern phones an IP67 or IP68 rating — water resists getting in — works in reverse once water is inside: it resists getting out. The only openings are the charging port, speaker meshes, microphone holes, and SIM slot, a few square millimeters in total.
For rice to help, water vapor would have to migrate from under a board shield, through the internal air gaps, out through those few openings, and then — only then — get absorbed by a grain of rice instead of ordinary room air. The rice is standing at the exit of a maze doing a job the open atmosphere already does for free.
Problem 2: Even at Its Own Job, Rice Is Mediocre
Set aside the sealed-phone issue and grade rice purely as a desiccant. It still fails. In the most widely cited head-to-head test — run by the electronics buyback company Gazelle in 2014 — uncooked rice ranked near the bottom of household absorbents, beaten by silica gel, couscous, and even instant oatmeal. Later lab work commissioned around phone-drying products measured the thing that actually matters: phones left in open air lost moisture as fast or faster than phones sealed in rice, because a closed bag of rice traps humid air around the device while a ventilated room keeps carrying vapor away.
That's the quiet punchline of the whole myth: the bag is working against you. Rice absorbs ambient humidity slowly, with low surface area, while simultaneously blocking the airflow that does the real drying.
Problem 3: Rice Adds Damage of Its Own
This is the part that turned Apple from silent to explicit. Rice sheds — starch dust, husk fragments, and occasionally whole grains that wedge into the charging port or speaker mesh. Here is the most expensive part of the myth, and it has nothing to do with rice at all. Liquid damage is a race between you and corrosion — the electrochemical attack that starts within hours when water, board metals, and residual battery current sit together. Salt water, pool water, and sugary drinks accelerate it dramatically. Corrosion is why phones famously "survive" a swim and then die one to three weeks later.
The rice ritual tells people to seal the phone away and wait two days. Two days is exactly the head start corrosion wants. By the time the phone comes out of the bag — working or not — mineral deposits are already forming under the shields where no home remedy reaches. So Where Did This Myth Come From?
The rice trick wasn't invented for phones. The leap to phones happened in internet forums during the late-2000s smartphone boom, and it spread because of a beautiful statistical accident: most briefly wet phones survive anyway. A phone splashed and promptly powered off has decent odds no matter what you do next. Bury it in rice, and when it boots two days later the rice gets the credit — survivorship bias in a Ziploc bag. Nobody posts "I put it in rice and it died anyway" with the same enthusiasm. What a Wet Phone Actually Needs
The honest protocol is unglamorous, which is probably why it never went viral:
- Power off immediately and leave it off. Water plus electricity is the killer; water alone is survivable.
